Product Review: ACME Smoked Salmon

One of my first reviews was of the Kirkland brand smoked salmon (lox; Product Review:Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon).

My family tends to buy the Kirkland brand because it is the best deal ($21-24 for two 12-ounce packages) and we find it tastier than some of the (even “fancier”) varieties.

Right before Passover this year, Costco had an in-store rebate on the (kosher for Passover certified) 16 ounce ACME smoked salmon $4 off the usual price of $16) so we gave it a try. Although lox without a bagel may seem pointless, we actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

The lox itself was not too different from the Kirkland variety so there is little to report. It was very good,  with a strong taste. It was salty of course, but not overwhelmingly so. It was sliced a bit thicker than I usually like but it did not bother me too much, likely because it did not have the thick, “stringy/gummy” parts that ruin other cuts of lox. I ate it on the side of (kosher for Passover) whitefish salad (Product Review: Bluehill Bay Smoked Whitefish Salad), broccoli kugel (Product Review: Golden Taste Broccoli Kugel) and cantaloupe. The more subtle taste of the broccoli kugel and the sweetness of the cantaloupe helped balance out the salt and it was a very good mix of flavors in the meal.

Have you tried this brand of lox?

Do you eat lox without bagels/rolls?
